What is CEREC?

CEREC refers to a computer-assisted design and milling system that crafts precise porcelain crowns and onlays in just one visit, with less drilling and grinding than typical restorations. The beauty of CEREC is that it is stronger, more natural-looking and more convenient than tooth restorations of the past.

CEREC stands for Chair-side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. As the name implies, these restorations offer the most conservative, life-like and convenient restorations available in dentistry today.

When I first heard of this concept I laughed. How could a camera measure a tooth 3-dimensionally and then design and mill a restoration with the accuracy of a high-quality lab? I now know that CEREC can do it even better and stronger than a lab!

In 1998, Northway Family Dentistry was the first office to implement this amazing technology in West Michigan. For years our office was employed to demonstrate and educate local dentists on CEREC. We have since placed more than 6,000 restorations with a success rate equal to that of gold crowns (the previous “gold” standard).
