What to Expect: Dental Anesthesia for Children

In most cases the dentist will need to provide anesthetic for treatment. This is generally the most anxious event in the appointment. Time after time, this seems to be a pivotal moment; if all goes well, the rest of the procedure will more than likely be tolerated well. Careful measures are taken to help your child through this step. We provide flavored topical anesthetic to numb the gums before the injection, and we obscure the needle from view. Many times we can anesthetize a single tooth, which is a great way to avoid having a numb lip and tongue. This method also is less painful and doesn’t have the intimidating stigma of a dental syringe.

As much as we would like every child to have a great experience in our office, there are times when the best course of action is to refer the child to a specialist. These decisions are made with the best interest of the child in mind.
