Julie M. called on a Monday morning with a loose metal crown we had done over 19 years earlier. Even though the x-ray from the previous cleaning looked good, we were concerned because we know metal can hide cavities.
Sure enough, when we removed the crown we found a hidden problem. Compare the adjacent healthy and natural-looking 5-year old CEREC restoration next to the crown in question.
Julie’s metal crown on her back molar came loose after 19 years. Dental exams and x-ray did not expose any decay.
Once the metal crown was removed, hidden decay was found. Metal crowns frequently hide decay from x-rays.
Thankfully, we were able to remove the decay and rebuild the tooth with a new crown, but that is not always the case.
